It looks like the New Lion Brewery Hop Club harvest of 2017 is going to greatly outstrip the harvest of 2016 (1.3kg), if the photos you’ve been sending in are anything to go by! This post is to give you the information you need in order to be able to bring in this year’s harvest so we can transform them into this year’s batch of ‘Local Hero‘.
Harvest Day is this Saturday, Saturday 9th September. Members’ hops are maturing at slightly different rates, but 11th September was, traditionally, when the Kent hop harvest started, and it was perfect last year, so we’re going to go for it again. Hopefully a bit of sunshine this week will finish them off nicely. If you are wondering how to tell if your hops are ready to harvest, this great little video will be very useful:
Like last year, the idea is to get them in to the Brewery, on Station Road, between 9.30 and 12, at which point they will go into the brew. If you are away on Saturday, and would like to get them in beforehand, you could pick them on the Thursday or Friday, put them in some kind of sealed container, such as a large Tupperware, and we will keep them in our chiller until Saturday. But do try to get them sealed in as soon as possible after picking. Those all important volatile oils are the thing we’re after!
We look forward to seeing you there. Here is a picture of Steve Bennett and friends with his hop harvest. Looks like they’ve started celebrating already. See you Saturday. Here’s how Harvest Day went last year…
